6 Hacks to Make New Year’s Resolutions Stick

Someone once told me that quitting smoking is easy. He had already done it a half-dozen times. The same can be said for many of the resolutions people make, whether it’s getting more exercise, eating right, or setting a self-improvement goal.

In fact, according to research from the University of Scranton, only 46 percent of New Year’s Resolutions last longer than six months. Make your resolutions stick with these helpful hacks.

Break larger goals down into more manageable tasks
A big goal can be overwhelming and intimidating. By focusing on one small step at a time, you make reaching your goal much easier.

Identify and avoid negative triggers
For example, if stress causes you to eat junk food or smoke, try to avoid stressful situations, or find other ways to cope with it.

Reward small wins
Resolutions are hard. Rewarding yourself can provide the motivation you need to keep at it. But that’s not all. Rewards also provide positive reinforcement that builds over time.

Use the buddy system
Nobody wants to let someone else down. That’s why when you pair up with someone, you’re less likely to make excuses or give up.

Gamify
Make keeping your resolutions more fun. For instance, if your resolution is to lose weight, you could hold a Biggest Loser contest with your friends.
